My Standard Email Reply
I get contacted fairly often about Hutton Poplar School and to avoid needless repetition I have put my standard email reply here. If there is anything not covered by this website - or you just want to post information about yourself on it - please contact me on sunningdale8@hotmail.co.uk
Personally I have no experience or direct knowledge of Hutton Poplar School. Nor do I know of any organisation for former Hutton people - although there are a few individuals who do things like organise reunions and are planning to get out a newsletter (some details are in my webpages). My involvement with the School is simply because a know a couple of former Hutton scholars (Bill Lockwood and Dougie West) who are always keen to contact former Hutton people.
Not being an old scholar or a researcher I personally have very little more information - and nothing at all about individual people. The general consensus is that London Metropolitan Archives is the best source of information about people who were at the school.
Most of the information I have about Hutton Poplar School (including links to important sites) is set out on my several Hutton Poplar School webpages. Please click here to see one. My own mini-website has grown faster than I am able to keep it organised - so until I get it properly organised (which could take a while given the RSI problem) useful information can be found on almost any page. The tabs above represent what plan to do with the information rather than what I have done with it already. Look everywhere!
People's experiences of Hutton are very different - both personally and because the School changed as time went by. Few people now remember now remember it as Poplar Training School (1907-1930) run by Poplar Board of Guardians. Quite a few however remember it as Hutton Residential School (1930 -1965 ) run by London County Council and Hutton Poplar Children's Home (1965-1982) run by the London Borough of Hackney.
A problem for all Hutton Scholars is that, with a few notable exceptions, most enquirers are only interested in their own particular enquiry, not in forming an organisation for old scholars in general. That isn't a criticism of anyone. Many people who were there at a young age only have a very hazy recollection of the place and so only a limited personal association with it. Their memories of the period - not because of the School itself but the circumstances that led to them actually being at it - are often unhappy. Nonetheless those who do remember the place well (with at least one serious exception) do often have very positive recollections of the school and their time there.
A particularly useful page of mine (although it is out of date now) is information stolen from Friends Reunited. I'm surprised they haven't sued me. One advantage my page has over Friends Reunited is that it lists several of the different headings under which Hutton Poplar School is listed (some people obviously started new lists because they didn't realise there were already lists started). Friends Reunited of course have no way of knowing that variations of name relate to a single organisation. To see this webpage please click here. However please remember that the information I stole from Friends Reunited is now about two years old. There may be new entries on these lists by now, or even additional lists I know nothing about. On Friends Reunited Search for anything to do with Hutton of Shenfield - including workplace lists as well as pupil and student lists. Please let me know of any new lists you find and I will indicate these on my Friends Reunited webpage.
Should anyone wish to start an organisation or website, although a medical condition (proneness to RSI if I overdo computer work) does not allow me to take on a lot of computer work, I am happy to put information about the organisation and website on my webpages. If such a website becomes established I will close down my own webpages except for a redirect to the new website.
Well that's about it from me. Needless to say I wish you well in your researches and would remind you that there is a crying need for an "Old Huttonians" organisation - which I have already devised an imaginary badge (the motto referring to a line in the school song).
Best wishes.
Peter Stephenson
